8 Things My Maa Told Me That Are Not True
Where can I start?
Eight would probably be less as I have a long list.
DRINKING tea will make you dark. I get it now, too much nicotine in our system and yellowing of teeth. You could have just appealed to my logic. Clearly, you had very little faith in my intelligence and have to say it worked for many years, lol.
My Maa Always Said Study hard now and you will never have to worry again. Ok, this was your favourite statement. I have never liked writing exams, so before every exam, she would say, if you study now and work hard your life will be set and you will have the rest of your life to enjoy. It did get me through a lot of exams but maa, studies never get over. After mine got over, kids have taken over. When will I get to enjoy ;)?
Kids will be your biggest joy. Yes, they are maa, but my life is way more than just my kids. Women are so much more than being mothers. I love doing my own thing, my writings, my travel, my exercise and maa every part of my life when put together gives me joy.
If you eat seeds tree will grow in your stomach. Well maa, see for seed germination, three factors are essential; water, oxygen, and light and why did you expect it to find sunlight inside my body? Moreover, in the digestive tract, the seed will be digested by the digestive enzymes. Whew, no trees, inside my stomach!!
When I asked you my maa, how was it to be a mom? You told me these wonderful stories on how joyous motherhood is! You forgot to tell me the struggles it brings along. You forgot to mention the delivery pain which I felt despite the epidural. How did you do it, in your time and that too without an epidural?

My Maa Said When your tooth breaks plant it in a pot and a Tooth fairy will take it in the night and leave you gifts. Gifts became money at times when tooth fairy was generous. I only realised this when she suddenly stopped leaving me gifts. This was one of the cutest things you hid from me and made me believe in fairy tales. Now my kids are enjoying their gifts from the tooth fairy.
My Maa Told Me Don’t keep cutting your hair or after a point, it will stop growing! Cutting the ends of your hair doesn’t affect the follicles in your scalp, which determine how fast and how much your hair grows
If you make funny faces, your face will become like that only. Face muscles are the most elastic muscles and while some medical conditions can cause facial paralysis or muscle contraction, this won’t happen from making a silly face. I know now that this was your tactic to stop us from looking silly!!
Do you also, have some interesting things to share which your mom used to say but doesn’t hold true?
We would love to add them to this list.
If you like the post, pin it for future reference!
While other points brought laughter, I felt good reading about your honest thoughts about motherhood. I too write honestly about these emotions. I too wonder why my mom or women around don’t talk about the struggles of motherhood. And I also agree with the fact that my baby is my pride & joy but motherhood is not the only thing that defines me.
Yes! Beautifully said Purva!
Hehehe! This was such a beautiful post, filled with humour and nostalgia. Loved the seed will grow into trees ? Weāve all heard these innocent sayings from our mums ??
Hahaha. Thank you Noorain!
I can relate to all these. Especially, if you eat seeds, a tree will grow in the stomach.
As far as I remember, My Maa told me that if you don’t brush your teeth before going to sleep, a rat will come and take away your teeth. Well, a rat can’t enter my mouth and pluck my tooth like an apple from a tree.
As I grew up, I realised it wasn’t true and this was her way to make me follow a good dental hygiene.
Hahhaha. That one is funny as well
All these things remind me of the memories of my childhood. Very nice post.
Thank You, Priyanka
Lol, seriously this point reminded me of mom sayings. Don’t make funny faces and seed grow in the stomach that are moms words. Love your post
Thanks Gurjeet!
I loved this post and I think all mothers tell their kids something similar. Maa ki kahaniya and most of them are not true for sure. lols
Yes Jiya!
Two things I remember my mom saying was don’t make faces, or your face will permanently get weird and don’t eat seeds, trees will grow! Omg I got so scared when I ate orange seeds ???
Hahaha Mrinal
Haha…I remember being told some of these by my Mom and am guilty of doing some to my kids. ?
I can laugh at them now but logic or not, these are hilariously cruel! ?
I think we are all a little guilty of doing it to our kids as well. Haha
Haha. I think all moms are thinking same. I really enjoyed reading this post, it’s funny yet true thing.
I feel so too!
Hilarious post, Prerna. I love each and every point of this post and trust me all moms say the same things. Seed and tree story, hahaha. In fact, I also told this to my child once and she laughed saying, Mom, you are funny.

Now, this was an interesting read. That thing about studies, well I, too, feel that student life was better than adult life. At least there wasn’t so much stress. ?
Yes. That’s true Reetuparna.
Haha, this took me down the memory lane. All thanks to my mom’s gyan about tea, that I never had tea in my life?.
Haha. Thanks to mom for actually making us believe in such things.
These are traits passed from generation to generation. Even I find myself saying the same things to my kid.
Haha I think we all are guilty of that!
