Adult Acne – NOT A MYTH !!

All my life I have been blessed with clear skin, so imagine when I saw a breakout on my cheeks the other day. Am I breaking out because I use too much make-up? Or have I been eating a lot of junk food? I could relate to millions of women undergoing stress due to acne. Numerous questions led me to my three point acne prevention quest.

Why?
Studies have traced the cause of acne to one thing: hormonal fluctuations. Whether brought on by lifestyle (stress, diet), PMS, pregnancy, or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), the result is the same.Other reasons are exposure to sun, extreme weather and improper nutrition. Adult acne is not a myth and it exists for both Men and Women.

Avoid?
Keep your hair away from your face as much as possible.Even while using hair products like shampoo, gel etc. Make sure you wash your face after applying as oils from these products may seep into your skin.
Keep your hands clean and don’t touch your face very often.
Exercise helps cut stress, which may contribute to acne outbreaks.
Physical activity also helps your skin by increasing your blood circulation, which sends more oxygen to your skin cells and carries cell waste away.
Wash your face regularly and keep changing your towel, at least once a day.
Practice stress relieving strategies, like meditation.
Sleep More.
Drink more water.
Have a balanced diet.
Become a fan of Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3s have been shown to control the production of leukotriene B4, a molecule that can increase sebum and cause inflammatory acne.Omega-3s can be found in supplements or in foods like walnuts, avocados, flaxseed oil, and salmon.
Treat?
The best care for acne prone oily skin, however, is the 3 daily musts of the beauty regime, cleansing, toning, and slight moisturising after the above two steps.

Some home DIY remedies are;
You should use a mud pack once a week. This is available in different brands. In India you get it loose as well and is known as “Multani Mitti” (ie the soil of Multan). It works wonders for the skin and also reduces wrinkles. Just apply it wet, let it dry and wash away. Some people add honey to it as well, but only if it suits you. Honey makes my skin itchy so I avoid it.

Another  pack which works wonders is,the cucumber pack. Take  half teaspoon each of lime and cucumber juice mixed together. You can use cool cucumber pieces (even wet and cooled cotton helps)on your eyes and rest, with eyes closed, for 15-20 minutes.

Whatever you do, don’t ever pop pimples. If the three point acne prevention quest, doesn’t work for you, see your dermatologist and let them chemically treat you.

Thanks for these amazing tips, Prerna 🙂 Also, one should always wear SPF! Too much sun exposure can cause tanning, large pores and wrinkles.
