Summer time is fun time for kids. Also, summers can be unbearable at times. Not only due to heat but also because your little ones are hanging over your head all the time. We would love them to play outdoors and give us some space, but then the heat can be too harsh for their skin. Let’s visit some new ones and revisit some old tips in the book of parenting on how to take care of your kids this summer;

Give them a bath twice a day

If they are going to play outdoors, make sure they go out in the evenings when the temperature has cooled down. And giving them a bath after they come back from their play is a good idea. This will help them in combatting the heat and keep them feeling fresh.

Sweat issues

Excessive heat and physical activity can lead to sweating and can cause prickly skin. A good way to combat that will be to use prickly powders. You can also read my other post on home made deodorants.

Light Clothing

Feeling comfortable is most important. Make your child wear light colour clothing as light colours absorb heat better during summers and allow sweat to evaporate. Lightweight cotton clothes are the most preferred.

Sunscreen

Apply sunscreen liberally to cover all exposed skin, including your child’s ears, neck, hands and feet. Put on sunscreen 20 to 30 minutes before heading outdoors. SPF 30 is best for kids who are active outdoors for long periods of time

Drink a lot of water

We all know heat causes excessive sweating and can mean water loss from the body. That is why it is essential to drink a lot of water and prevents dehydration.

Water fruits

While the norm of drinking water is 2-3 litres every day. It’s very difficult to consume so much water, if you’re not used to it. That’s where eating  fruits that are water based like oranges, watermelons etc come into play. They not only keep your body hydrated but are rich in vitamins too.

Aam Panna

Now this is a homemade Indian Recipe, which helps in combatting the fierce Indian summers by keeping the body cool. It is a a drink made from the raw mango pulp and sugar. This is a generations old recipe and you can find the link to make it here.

Ward Off Those Mosquitos

Summer also means you can have to face the wrath of the mosquitoes, especially she outdoors. Dress your  kids in long sleeves and pants. That’s the best preventive measure. For added protection, apply an insect repellant containing 30 percent or less DEET to exposed skin once before going outdoors. Mosquito bands that are available nowadays work better as you don’t have to apply the lotion to kids and that can help avoid skin irritation.

Just keep these few things in mind and save your kids from sun strokes, scorched skin and other summer problems. Make this summer fun for them :)!
