This is just a start and unfortunately in one of the most beautiful cities in the world was the first one to get affected. If we are not conscientious on taking measures to save water then we are next. The problem is our upbringing. We have modern jacuzzi and showers in our homes and we waste more water cleaning utensils under open tap water and use pipes to clean our cars. The problem is we read this every second day and think about t for a few minutes and then go about doing our daily chores. We have become conditioned to not taking action and fading the news after a few days, no matter how much of a grave concern it is. The water scarcity in Cape Town did not happen overnight, the town folks were aware of it for last few years but they did what we do. Water is nothing less than liquid Gold as we need it for our very survival. Teaching our kids about the various practices that can help conserve water is a great parenting step. Here is how;
Check for leaks
You can help your children learn the need to save water by inculcating in them the habit of keeping a check on leaking taps, shower heads and pipes. This habit should be reinforced inside the home as well as public places. For instance, you visit a mall and see a leaky tap, you can inform the staff or management regarding it. Water is a natural resource and it must be preserved.
How To Save Water During Shower time
- Shower time is something children really love. So, restricting their shower time to less than 5 minutes is very important to save water. Set an alarm clock at 5 minutes sharp for them to enjoy their bathing time. This has a dual benefit of restricting water usage as well as making your kids more disciplined.
- Install low flow showerheads.
- Better still try using buckets instead of a shower to avoid wastage of water. The water that is left over in the bucket can be splashed on grassy lawns. Also, it is a good idea to water your plants early in morning or evenings to reduce evaporation.
Turn off the tap while brushing teeth To Save Water
An average child takes three to four minutes to brush his teeth. So, while they are brushing, they must be taught to turn off the tap to save water. The smallest of small measures will help save gallons of water each year. Do not let clean water simply run down the drain. Alternatively, you can get them a special cup for this purpose. This automatically restricts the quantity of water they use.
Save Water During Play Time
While using an inflatable pool during summers, put it in a grass lawn so that the plants can benefit from the spilt water. Also, do not fill up the water up to the brim to avoid spillage as far as possible. Lastly, after use, you can teach your children to utilize the pool water for watering plants, doing laundry etc.
Positive reinforcement.
It is a good practice to duly reward your children if they follow your advice and instructions. You can reward as treats or gifts! This would make sure that they continue their good behaviour.
Reuse Towels To Save Water
Make it a practice around your house to reuse towels for 2 to 3 days to avoid excess water usage in Laundry. To disinfect them, you may sun dry them.
Use Organic Cleaners To Save Water
Use of organic cleaning agents around the house ensures that the water that goes into the drain is not laden with excessive chemicals and toxins. Not only do you get to save a lot of money on cleaning products but the cost of water treatment for recycling is reduced by a great amount, as well. Kids love the idea of getting to experiment with certain DIY projects. Involve them in making organic cleansers out of Apple cider vinegar, Baking soda, essential oils etc.
Trying these steps to save water and adopting even one of them religiously helps in achieving the aim of saving the environment overall. Let’s give them a better future.
