It is 2018 now and kids prefer to eat their food while watching TV or using their electronic devices. They don’t realise the value of family and how important it is. Gone are the days when we would sit around with all the family members and eat together and exchange our sweet stories of the day and praise the food. Family mealtime is crucial and should be a crucial part of the day as well.
Living in urban cities does not help with it either. The kids have to go to school and colleges, there are working people in the house and then the housewives are left alone at home. The entire house members only come together at dinner time. That’s is the only time of day when we can sit together and chit chat about our daily lives. But most of the times, even that seems luxurious because we are all busy with something or another, we end eating at different times.
Brings Family Together
Family mealtime give the family members a sense of belonging. The children can also look forward to getting love and support from their parents and feel safe and secure.
Helps Raise Well-Adjusted Kid
The kids feel accepted by their family and don’t feel the need to search for it beyond. Most candid conversations happen at the dinner table and the kids too open up about their life. They feel less awkward socially and hence such kids do not show signs of depression. Family mealtime interaction and support can increase the self-esteem in kids.
Family Mealtime helps kids do better in school
Listening to grownups at the table exposes children to a different perspective of the world. Table talk gives youth a safe place to express their ideas. They gain the confidence to speak up in class. Parents are more likely to know about deadlines for homework, upcoming test days, and ways they can be involved with how their children are doing in school.
Family Mealtime provides better nutrition
Family mealtime provides nutrients that kids need to grow strong and healthy, such as calcium, fiber, and iron. How? Dinners at home are more likely to include nutrient-rich foods from all five food groups: vegetables, fruit, milk, grain and meat & beans. They are less likely to have too much fat and sugar. Cooking together teaches children and teens how to plan meals and prepare food – and how to clean up! Also, when you eat with your kids, you monitor what is going in their plates and they want to experiment when they see you eat something different.

Family Meal Time helps prevent weight problems
Children and teens are less likely to be overweight since they learn to eat healthful meals. Teens make better food choices than when they are eating away from home. Teens are less likely to have eating disorders like anorexia or bulimia.

Family Mealtime saves time and money
Food dollars go father when making larger family “batches” than buying individual or fast food meals. By cooking extra food for another meal, “planned-overs” can save time in the kitchen and money, too. Eating a home-cooked meal can be faster than driving to a restaurant, ordering, eating, and driving home.
Finally, Family Mealtime is important because eating together is enjoyable!
Kids like eating with their families! Teens may not show it but they say they enjoy family mealtime. Parents or other family members savour the good times with their kids at the table. You can tease each other, crack a few jokes, say your prayers together and tell each other how much you cherish your family! So, eating together is always a win-win!
