Republic Day:  Our heritage and what to teach our kids

So many of us sit, think and still
wonder,
But have we ever gave ourselves the chance to ask?
Well no!
We just rejoice and find ourselves
floating on cloud nine because
“it is just another public holiday”

                                                                                            ~~Poet Unknown~~

This Republic Day I posed a few questions to my kids and some kids around.

“What is Republic Day?”

“What is the difference between Republic Day and Independence Day?“

Some of them confused Republic day with Independence Day, the younger ones were clueless and some could explain me the difference but did not understand the relevance of it in their lives.

Just to put it simply, Republic is a system of government in which the power is vested in the people.

In the present scenario, kids look at other countries to be really safe and comfortable because of their growth and development plus social and economic status. Most of the kids feel Indian Independence day and Republic are just another public holidays for them. It is to be remembered that parents and the society have to be blamed for this situation among kids throughout the country. It is the duty and responsibility of the parents and teachers to teach the value of Independence Day.

I am sure some of us are wondering why?

What could kids learn from Republic Day?

It is to be noted that Independence isn’t just freedom of an individual or a nation but freedom of speech and thought. It is freedom in order to largely know that they are totally free to take any kind of decisions on their own, in contrast to our forefathers. Independence also means be proud and be happy with where you actually belong. You feel the people in the society belong to your own family in the form of neighbours, friends and relatives. There is a lot to be really proud of. Unless the people of this nation with hard work rightly blended with dedication and commitment are leading it to become the superpower of future. Unless we take this seriously there will still be school buses that are mobbed and kids that are traumatised.

Lesson learnt from Independence Day

Our kids are used to getting everything on a silver platter. They have not seen the hardships that one could face in life and they have absolutely no idea of the struggle our nation and its people went under, how they rose against the wrongs and how they took back the nation from under the hands of the British. Stories of these struggles and leaders can help in build character and chose strong role models.

Rich Indian heritage and culture

While we take pride in the fact that our kids know about the seven wonders of the world and who is the President of America,  they should be made to understand our age-old tradition and culture. The culture and heritage of India are incomparable in my opinion to anywhere in the world. We were known as the silk route which lured many traders and explorers to find us and then enslave us. We are the nation that rose from the ashes and rebuilt ourselves. It is a nation with many religion and language but people stay united even though different region follows unique tradition and culture.

The present generation kids are the future of India. If they are shaped properly by parents and society then the nation will progress at its own pace with a lot of perfection. They should be lead on the right path with great human values and respect for the nation so that India is safe and secure in their hand.
