Tips to get the most from your memory

Tips to get the most from your memory

Few weeks back, I had posted on Facebook about my forgetfulness;

I was always forgetful. It’s getting worse by the day. So when I step out for my runs I hide my keys somewhere in the house and go. Different places each time. Now I should have known this is not a smart idea when you have the memory of my calibre. The search is on and it’s been a week!!

And that’s when a friend suggested I should write a blog on it, so here I am!! We got Kalyani Kamble, an ICF certified Life Coach, Master NLP Practitioner & Image Consultantto advise us and this is what she had to say;

Your brain’s ability to change and grow, to get better, throughout your lifetime is called neuroplasticity.

Simply put, your brain is constantly changing.

And all of your daily habits influence — for either better or worse — how well your brain works, including your memory.

 the most effective ways to improve memory by harnessing the power of the brain’s ability to change.

A strong memory depends mostly upon your overall health and the vitality of your brain. Whether you’re a student or a professional into a demanding job, you have to be and stay mentally sharp. Let us learn about a couple of things that you can do to improve your memory and mental performance.

Pick the right kind of foods

You must have heard the old saying,” You are What you eat.” Various studies have revealed that ditching foods that are loaded with sugars and carbohydrates have a detrimental effect on your brain’s health.

Consuming foods with Vitamins and minerals is considered very good for brain health and improving your memory.To be specific, Green-leafy vegetables, Turmeric, Omega 3 fatty acids, Walnuts and fresh fruits are preferred, if you want to enhance your memory and utilize it to the fullest.

Exercise

It is imperative to include some form of light to moderate exercise, each day in your daily routine for healthy brain functioning. During exercise, nerve cells release certain proteins called Neurotrophic factors including a specific type called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). This, in turn, triggers various chemicals that promote neural health and benefits cognitive functions, such as: memory and learning.

Concentrate on one task at a time

Multitasking might sound really fancy but, it indeed stops your brain from functioning to maximum and tends to make you more forgetful.So, take a few classes on mindfulness or watch a few YouTube videos that can help you learn the tricks to be applied practically.

One good way is to write down the most important tasks you want to complete in a given day and focus on them, one at a time.Do not try to deal with 5 things at a time. Strike off the chores from the list, as and when you complete them.  If you are a kind of a person who is used to rushing through everything on your to-do list, you’re going to have to practice mindfulness but once you do it, it will become a habit

Have a place for everything and put everything in its assigned place.Your brain remembers patterns more effectively than random things.Putting your cell phones, chargers, house keys and car keys in their fixed place would help you avoid unnecessary panic when you need to rush out of the door.

Sleep is important

Lack of sound sleep at night is responsible for the inability to think clearly and remember things.It is very important that your body and brain get ample rest each night in order to get a good memory. A mid-day nap, for instance, might improve your kid’s brainpower remarkably.

Learn new skills

Just like any other organ in your body, Brain too develops as it is used more! Learning a new skill, doing something each day to boost your creativity can help a lot to boost your memory and brainpower.So, you must devote a few minutes of your day to something that is not a chore to you to improve your memory and de-stress each day.Take up: Gardening, Organizing, playing music, craft, DIY projects etc.

Watch a channel of some other language, pay attention to body language and decipher the message, its challenging at the same time easy. You will be surprised as to how much you understand the communication. Thanks to the tons of channels available. You can even watch some Japanese and Arabic soaps.

Meditate:

The average person has a non-stop flow of 50,000 to 70,000 thoughts per day.

Meditation might not sound like mental “exercise,” but quieting your perpetual thinking machine can be hard work.

Researchers at the UCLA Laboratory of Neuro Imaging have called meditation “push-ups for the brain.”

Over 1,000 published studies have demonstrated the health benefits of meditation.

All the above techniques help boost the memory.

The Power Of Essential Oils

Essential oils are naturally occurring volatile compounds extracted and concentrated from plants.

Ancient Greek scholars swear by rosemary to sharpen their minds.

Now science has confirmed that sniffing rosemary essential oil can significantly improve memory, processing speed, alertness, and focus on the spot!

Peppermint is another essential oil that can make you more alert and attentive.

Lemon/Orange oil can instantly liven up your mood and make you more attentive and refreshed.

These oils can be sniffed or mixed and applied in cream or oil base.

You may even spray have your instant mood transformer perfumes as well thereby increasing the supply of oxygen.

Hope you practice these and benefit from these, I am on it too!!
