10 Useful Tips For a Spic-n-Span Home This Diwali

It’s time for the annual house cleaning to start. If the idea daunts you, you are not alone. Here are 10 tips to get it done quickly and efficiently.

If your house cleaning is done already, then I doff my hat at you. But, if you are like me, leaving it till the last minute and then panicking, then welcome to my world.

House cleaning is a gigantic chore. But you need to do it before Diwali. If you plan to deck up and look pretty, your home needs to as well.

Don’t worry; I’ve got your back. I’ve put together some easy house cleaning tips that should see you breeze through the house.

#1 Make space for the clutter

Before getting started on the home cleaning, make sure you designate an area for all the stuff that you plan to discard. (You do plan to discard things, right?). If you don’t, everything will go right back where it came from.

#2 Always start at the top

Doesn’t matter which room it is, the first among many home cleaning tips is to start from the ceiling and move down towards the floor. All the accumulated dirt and dust will fall on the unclean surfaces. Fans, furniture, walls and finally the floor.

#3 Attack the kitchen

The Diwali sweets are all done, so now you can give the kitchen a thorough cleaning.

-Discard equipment that you do not use.

-Remove and clean the removable burner parts of the stove.

-Throw away ingredients that are past their expiry date.

-Dip a clean cloth in a solution of hot water and vinegar, and wipe down all surfaces.

-Rearrange the kitchen to use space efficiently.

#4 Don’t forget to clean your fridge

-Empty out the refrigerator.

-Dip a cut lemon in vinegar and use it to clean your fridge thoroughly.

#5 Move to the bedroom

-Remove all fabrics and put them to wash.

-Move furniture to the centre.

-Clean out dust bunnies and accumulated dust from corners.

#6 Cleaning the bed

-Dust and air out the mattress.

-When remaking the bed, don’t bend to tuck in the sheets. Instead lift up the corner with one hand and tuck the sheet with the other.

#7 Get to your wardrobe

-Remove everything from the wardrobe and wipe the shelves clean.

-If you haven’t used an article of clothing in a year, discard it.

-Make three piles with your clothes – to keep, to discard and to repair.

-Put the clothes back after you’ve got the three separate piles.

-Place Ambi Pur inside to make your clothes smell fresh.

#8 Make a pile for donating

In the pile of clothes that you are discarding, add toys, games and books that your home doesn’t need anymore. Diwali is about spreading happiness, isn’t it?

#9 Bathroom cleaning

-Collect all used and empty bottles, old toothbrushes, etc.

-Coat the insides of the WC with a toilet cleaner and let it work.

-Put all your stuff outside – soaps, shampoos, buckets, etc.

-Clean all surfaces with a liquid soap and a scrub.

-Rinse everything out with a 1:1 solution of vinegar and water.

-Pay attention to shower-head and taps.

-Brush the commode, remove all excess water from the floor and let everything dry properly before putting your things back inside.

#10 What’s left?

Don’t forget fans and grills.

-Use an old pillow case to wipe off the collected grime.

-Then use a liquid cleaner to get the shine back on.

Now that you have cleaned your house, it is also time to make space to make Rangoli for Diwali. Rangoli is auspicious and you need to make it daily during Diwali! Hence make ample space at the entrance, to invite the Goddess beautifully.

Simplified it, didn’t I? The last and most important part of my house cleaning tips is to use hand gloves for all these tasks to protect your hands.
