Indian Weddings are a pompous affair.This is the time even the most casually dressed women, will dig in their lockers and showcase their ancestral jewellery.With everything reaching the social media in a matter of minutes from when you actually wore it.We want to definitely look our best and so it’s important to pay attention to our clothes, jewellery, hairdo, and makeup.
So let me tell you how I did it, and maybe it will help you out;
- Get all ambiguity out and get the correct timings/venue and functions list. ESSENTIAL!! A wedding card only mentions the main functions, you have to plan for functions like haldi and mandap which is not mentioned on the card. (This an example of a North Indian wedding, so if you’re from a South Indian or a Bengali background, plan as per your functions).
- Create an excel sheet like this; WEDDING PLANNER, which will mention in detail, the timing, date, venue of the function and along with it, you can plan your clothes, jewellery and even put pictures. So that when you pack you pack everything together and tag it for that particular day.
- Now plan everything from your outfit, to jewellery, to makeup and shoes and some will even put down hairdos.The more details you plan, the easier it will be during the wedding.
- Now start clicking pics of the outfits and try the hairdos before (mostly use youtube for quick and easy hairdos). There should be a few hairstyles for bad hair days, if you’re going to be in a cold place like me, washing your hair every day is not an option. You can use LOreal’s dry shampoo for active women for a quick fix and use a hair smoothner for the hair ends.
- Plan the gifts that you need to buy, add them to your total budget and remember to pack them. Put on your list of things to do, so that there are no last glitches.
- Keep a budget and don’t get too stressed if you shoot it by 10%-20% for one outfit, get the other made from an old saree(always works for a wedding) and balance the budget.

Don’t cringe on make-up as it can make or break your look. I love Mac makeup for my base make up. You will need a studio finish foundation, a blush, a fixing compact, a kajal pencil, eyeliner and brushes. Apart from this eyeshadows and lipsticks will depend on the outfit.
- Prepare an easy dance routine and just use it in any Bollywood song. The easiest way to do this is to surf on youtube and there are plenty of such videos.
- Get sarees stitched as you want to wear them to save time. There are loads of tailors and shops that stitch the pleats and pallu and then it becomes like a ready made saree which you just have to slip into.Most shops that retail sarees, do it at a minimal cost for you if you buy a saree from them.
- Remember, on the D-day, you may not have enough time to make your hairdo. Getting a last minute parlour appointment might be tough as everyone you know will be heading to that parlour. So get in touch with your host at least a month in advance and pre-book a parlour appointment in the vicinity.
Once the event arrives all you need to do is look at the excel sheet and pull out the tagged outfit for the day. Helps save last minute delays and confusions.
