Choose Better: Why Say No To Plastic?

Choose Better: Why Say No To Plastic?

Choose Better: Why #SayNoToPlastics?

Why this post now? Isn’t plastic already banned? Yes, but only for disposable plastic. While it’s a start, I am continuing this discussion because we need to take this beyond just disposable plastic. We as a planet are drowning in plastics and every plastic we have ever used has not decomposed yet as it takes over 200 years, which would mean 2.5 lifetimes if we live a healthy life.

So we have produced more plastics than we can get rid of and it’s not only plastic but a lot of stuff we don’t realise when we through it as garbage. I have seen people throwing peels in mountains saying it will decompose as it’s natural but just to give you a perspective. As you see using disposable diapers is a hazard too(but as a mom I understand the importance) and let’s pick one thing at a time.

Just sharing this hoping it will open your eyes to why it’s high time to ditch plastics in our lives. A moment’s convenience is not worth killing your planet.

If this is not convincing enough, let me introduce you to the health hazards of using plastics. It directly affects you and your family. Plastics contain Bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical that, once ingested, mimics estrogen in our bodies. The more it’s heated and cooled, the more the chemicals in that container begin to break down. Even the  “microwave safe”, is going to leach chemicals. Microwave Safe simply means the plastic wot melt with heat.  If at all you have to use it better to use plastic which reads “BPA-Free.” I would advise you to use glass and stainless steel instead. I know they are not very fashionable but safe and healthy. The choice is yours.

Here are some simple solutions I found on the internet, which if we all adopt can make a huge difference and these are simple.

If you are more conscious then you can recycle and reuse home too. Found this as a great option.

This lady in India converts plastic to fuel. Get you and your friends to join in and send her the disposable plastic don’t throw it in the garbage as that would create more plastic waste.

There is a controversy brewing that paper will replace plastic and that means more cutting of trees but we do not need to replace all plastic with paper. We need to change habits. Stop using disposables! It will always create waste no matter what the material. Reuse and recycle as much as possible. Plastic is hazardous to health as well, as it leeches chemicals in our food which further has a direct correlation to many diseases that we are facing today. Replace with steel and glass as much as possible and again reuse and recycle. Don’t say yes to plastic because we can’t change our habits.

Let me end with a simple economics theory, demand creates supply. If you ask for non-plastic packaging and for environment-friendly products and brands are sure to follow suit. I am so glad that Maharashtra as a state has started a #noplastic movement and is now going to be fining people on its usage, though limited to plastic bags. High time, other states, countries adopt it. As plastics are an unhealthy option for us and for the planet.
