How To Keep Fit While Travelling

Now, this is a sore topic with me and I struggle with weight issues every time I travel. If travel includes a lot of walking then maybe I am better off but if it is luxury travel my weight shoots up. Now with summer vacations around the corner and many of you like me would be hitting your favourite Holiday spot for some relaxed time with your families, right? If you have recently worked really hard to shed the extra weight and get your body back in shape, you must put some effort to keep fit. I am probably the last role model here but then that’s exactly why I need to talk about it. For you and for me.

#1 Check the facilities in your hotel

While travelling for leisure or for business, it is important that you look out for a hotel with a decent fitness centre, if not a lavish one. A treadmill and some dumb bells would serve the purpose. Read a few user or traveller reviews to get to know more about the facilties the hotel offers before booking it.

#2 Explore the surroundings of your hotel

You can work out outdoors if your hotel does not have a gym and you are sticking to a budget. You can go for a jog around a surrounding park or hotel lawns or perhaps, on the beach that is easily accessible. Nothing like exploring a new city.

#3 Stay Hydrated

It is important to drink enough water while you are travelling so that you do not feel exhausted on the go and more intake of water boosts metabolism. Keep a water bottle handy, always. Other sources of Water you can look up to are : Juices, Buttermilk, Green Tea, Coconut water etc.

#4 Make healthier food choices

Yes, it is ok to cheat on your diet while you are on a holiday and it is a sin, not to indulge in local delicacies of a particular cuisine but, it is not wise to go overboard with making incorrect food choices, either. Do not let all the hard work go down the drain in just a few days. So, stay aware of your choices. Simple things like going for a smoothie instead of soft drink and switching the white bread with multi-grain bread in your sandwich, picking more of veggies and fruits at the breakfast buffet would do the trick. A lot of hotels now stock superfoods which are a great choice when opting for healthy meals.

#5 Ask for guest trials

If your hotel/apartment doesn’t have a gym find out about the one nearest one and head there. Many gyms allow a free trial session at the gym for a single day. You can always ask for a guest pass and workout if you have spare time and then follow up with sauna or accessing the steam room to flush out the toxins.

#6 Carry lightweight exercise equipment while travelling

Lightweight exercise equipment, such as: A yoga mat, kettle bells, skipping ropes etc can be carried along in your luggage. These hardly add to the total luggage weight and are great to workout while you are travelling. I feel for yoga you just need enough space to roll a mat and practice. There was one video of a female practising yoga in an aeroplane while on her seat. Now we don’t have to go to that extreme but it’s an interesting post to read.

#7 Explore the city more on foot

This works like a charm and when exploring the city on foot you will discover the heart of the city better than any other way plus the mileage you get on your step count will be enough for your cardio for the day without even realising it. We averaged 12000-17000 steps a day on our Europe tour and it was fun.

Hope you and me keep these tips in mind and not let a few days of travel lose on your fitness goals. Happy Travels. Stay tuned to my Facebook, twitter and Insta for my latest travel updates.
