Learning how to paint on glass is fun & an interesting hobby. There are plenty of creative ideas you can try once you learn the basics such as using glass paints to turn an old chandelier into a beautiful garden/ outdoor decoration. Pretty marbleized patterns can be created by moving the glass around after dropping a few drops of paint. Using a tape, you can make stripes & create lamps, decorate bowls and literally, the sky is the limit once you’ve really got a hang of how to do glass painting.
Anyone can do glass painting as it is quite simple & doesn’t necessarily require great drawing or painting skills. All you need is a little practice and some patience & of course, some glass painting ideas. You need to be cautious as glass needs to be handled with care and framing charges for glass aren’t cheap either so start with some simple glass painting ideas.
One of the easiest glass painting techniques is using an OHP sheet. It is perfect for beginners to practice and make a simple and beautiful painting using an OHP sheet and a few supplies such as water-based glass paint, glass outliner, a silver foil, a soft cloth to wipe off excess paint & a cardboard for framing it later.
If you feel confident enough to paint directly on glass, you don’t need an OHP sheet. Also, various glass painting designs are available on the internet. Once you pick a design, just follow these steps:
- Clean the glass carefully and make it dry.
- Trace the outlines of the design using a glass outliner.
3. Slowly squeeze from the top of the Liner tube.
4. Start from the top and proceed to the bottom of the design so that you won’t smudge the lines.
5. Try making continuous lines without squeezing too much as it might result in thicker lines that won’t be good.
6. Once the complete outline is ready, let it dry for 10 to 15 minutes. Ensure that any blotting mistake is wiped off with a soft cloth before it dries off.
7. Once the outline is dry you can start filling colors inside the design.
8. Once the design is complete, allow it to dry for 30 to 40 minutes. Reverse it and frame it using a thick cardboard and tape.

You can place crushed silver foil behind the painting as background while framing it but this is optional. Some general tips include;
- 3D Fabric outliners in Golden color for glittery work to add that extra charm to the painting.
- Avoid very thin lines as they have to be sufficiently thick to keep the paint from flowing outside the lines.
- Additionally, while pouring the colors, avoid air bubbles. If you do end up with some bubbles, burst them with a needle or use ear buds to break them.
