How To Develop Your Child’s talent

The elementary years of the child’s life are very crucial. It is during this time when most of the brain development and skill enhancement takes place. Every kid has his or her own set of abilities, though it might need some effort on your part to recognize and develop them. Your little one might be the first in the family to have a penchant for the gymnastics or might be spontaneous at making people laugh. Talent can appear in varied forms. It takes the right kind of nurturing in order to shine. Here are certain ways of tapping your child’s natural gifts.

Varnika Agarwal, career coach and mentor of My Big Leap, says;

‘Follow your passion’ is often a very cliched phrase. It’s very common to hear people tell you, follow your passion and everything else will follow.
But how does one find that passion? It is in these formative years that parents should expose their kids to a variety of activities. Let them dirty their hands at various things for them to be able to find out and explore themselves! Observe your kids closely and take cues, such that you can help them pursue their interest.
It is then that they will slowly realize whether they are really passionate about it or not? Once you have together identified the area of interest, ensure that you let your kid pursue it.
It’s their perseverance that will distinguish a hobby from a passion.

Pay attention to your kids

To develop a talent, it is very important to identify it first. Most of us, as parents get so busy in our day to day tasks and our professional life that we fail to give enough attention to our kids. In such a scenario, these talents can be easily missed.

Therefore, it is very important to observe your child during routine activities like playtime, coloring time or when they are watching television. This can give you a hint if they are keen towards music/ dancing/ painting or if they have leadership qualities.

Introduce them to newer activities

Not every child has the same set of interests and talents. Therefore, in order to identify what your child is inclined towards or can be good at, you need to expose them to a variety of topics, games, skills as well as activities. Whenever you get a chance, take them for outings that involve various activities like skating, swimming, yoga etc.Unless they are offered enough opportunities in the formative years, their talents would not bloom to the fullest.

Listen to your kids

Instead of expecting your kids to follow a certain norm or fit into your idea of where their talent lies, let them explore their options. Your child must be naturally able to choose where their interests and talents lie.

Invest in skill development

If you are serious about the development of your child’s talent, you may need to invest some money in a private tutor or a streamlined course/classes and special equipment as well.

Nurture your child’s talent

Interact with teachers

Teachers spend a lot of time with your kids at the school. Their inputs can be really helpful for you to identify where the talents of your kids lie. Also, if you know you that your child is good at something, you can ask their teachers to push them in the right direction. For instance: If your kid loves to paint and there is some art competition or carnival coming up, the teacher can help your kid enroll for the same.

Be Supportive Of Your Child’s Talent

Your child is unique in every way. So, in order to help them reach their full potential, they definitely need your support. Not all children can be A graders. So, if your child is good at sports or has some skill that they are improving at then, you must encourage them. As long as the grades are not bad, do not curb your child’s talents.

Let your kids progress at their own pace

Don’t haste your kids into mastering anything. Let them move at their own pace. This way they have a better scope of making mistakes, correcting them and learning from them. Also, this makes them feel at ease to set achievable targets and explore new possibilities.

Lastly, it is important that your child does not feel burdened or unable to cope up with too many commitments like school, tuitions, and classes for nurturing their talent. Let them balance things as per their convenience. The aim is to flourish your child’s talent and not to make your child a multi-tasker.
