Keeping Up With The Monsoon Runs

Keeping up with the monsoon runs some tips and tricks

Keeping up with the monsoon runs

There are several things to associate with the rains. Be it the first earthy fragrance, a long drive, or chai and pakodas – all these things come naturally to one’s mind when one thinks of monsoon. But would you be surprised when I say that I also associate rains with runs? Perhaps, some of you will :).

Monsoon might seem to be one of those ‘dreaded’ seasons for your running schedule – but actually, it’s not. The good news is that monsoon runs could be much more fun than in any other weather. In fact, running in the showers come with its own set of benefits – it helps burn more energy, help you run longer and faster, and is a big stress buster.

With a little preparation, you can make running in the rains as enjoyable as a cup of piping hot tea. Here are a few tips that would help.

Monsoon Run? Embrace the weather

If your main concern is to not to get wet when you run, you better not venture out. The entire fun of monsoon runs is embracing the weather. Of course, you don’t want to get drenched and catch a cold too often – but not even the finest pair of waterproof gears will save you from the showers. Don’t worry, you’ll fall in love with it eventually.

Invest in proper running gears – from head to toe

A hat with a brim comes in handy to ward off water from your face, and helps you see clearly even during heavy rains. Make sure your hat is sturdy enough to bear the blow of strong winds.

Selecting the right running shoes in monsoon is not only important but extremely crucial for your safety too. Choose water-resistant but breathable pair of running shoes for the monsoon. Shoe top with tight mesh will help keep the debris out.

Heavy and consistent rains tend to make the running tracks slippery that could lead to injuries. Make sure that the footwear has a good grip and prevents any slips or skids while you run.

Choose well-fitted clothes that are breathable, sweat-wicking and light. Avoid cotton clothing as it will soak up the water and weigh you down. Cotton will also make you feel cold.

Choose reflective clothing during monsoon run

Rains lead to lower visibility which is quite a safety concern. Reflective clothing with bright colours or stripes easily stand out even in the rains and can be spotted by vehicle drivers. Go for your favourite neon and give your wardrobe a nice and bright makeover.

Carry an extra pair of clothes for your monsoon run

Rainy weather is unpredictable and can often land you in unforeseen situations such as being stranded outdoors for a long time. Wearing wet clothes for a long time can lead to sore and stiff muscles, and also make you vulnerable to falling sick. It is always safe to carry an extra pair of light clothes in your bag.

Keep yourself hydrated

Surprised? Well, don’t be.

Just like in winters, one often tends to drink less water in the rainy season too. It could be the main reason for dehydration and other problems including skin diseases. Like all seasons, running in the rains increases sweating and dehydrates your body.  Drink enough water and ensure a good intake of fluids to keep your energy levels up and your running plans intact.

Diet plays an important role too

It is true that our taste buds are extremely sensitive to deep-fried foods during monsoon. However, too much of oily food and junk could be a huge roadblock in your fitness regime. Your diet plays a crucial role in maintaining your stamina, which will immensely help with your running schedule. Have lots of warm soups, fresh fruits, and vegetables this season. Try reducing salt and caffeine intake to prevent sluggishness. Do include garlic in your diet if you like the taste. Garlic enhances digestion and strengthens our immune system.

Also, never skip your breakfast. A hearty breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

Take care of your electronics

You don’t have to ditch your favourite music or podcast while on the running trail during the monsoon run. Keep your mobile phones and iPods in a ziplock pouch or a waterproof running belt. This will help to keep the moisture off your expensive electronic items.

Keep safety a priority during your monsoon run

As much as you might love to be enjoying those jogs with rains, keep your health and safety a priority. Refrain from venturing out during thunderstorms or even a heavy downpour. Monsoon is the season when infections spread very fast. Therefore, ensure that you maintain the required hygiene while taking care of your fitness routine. Make best friends with hand sanitizers and antiseptic creams.

Let rains not hamper your running schedule

As much as we enjoy the rains, the cozy effect of this season makes us a bit lazy.  This affects our workout schedule too. And if you are a running freak like me, the incessant rains and muddy puddles could disrupt your routine. However, a little bit of planning is all you need to avoid any speed breakers in your running regime. Paying attention to small things – from running shoes to your diet, could make monsoon runs an all-time special outdoor activity.
