- Swelling, Redness & Discolouration of Breast
If you find the whole breast swollen or part of breast swollen with no lumps. The reddening and discolouration of the breast is a warning sign.
- Lumps in the Breast
Development of mass or lumps in the breast should not be ignored, it can be malignant or benign. Self-examination of breasts can detect lumps. At times, the lumps can be seed-like and scattered in the breast. There can be a pain in the lumps or no pain. Lumps can also be felt around the collarbone or under the armpit.
- Nipple Discharge
If you find sudden watery or bloody discharge from the nipple without being squeezed.
- Nipple Retraction
If the nipple retracts or inverts, get it checked. Instead of been outward, it is pulled into the breast.
- Thickening of the Nipple or Breast Skin
If you find the skin around the breast and the nipple thickening suddenly then it is a matter of concern. There are women who have thick skin around the breasts or nipple due to breast density but if you notice sudden development, it is a warning sign.

Self-examination in a month is a must and if you find any one of the signs & symptoms developing, immediately consult the doctor and go for important investigations to rule out malignancy. Annual mammography screening is advised for the women above 30 to be on safe side. Even if you have few symptoms from the list, it can be benign but it is better to seek medical aid. Early detection will save your life.
